Finding Hope and Spreading Awareness

Kidney 4 Kayla’s primary mission is to help find a kidney donor to help save Kayla’s life, but its vision is even broader: The organization wants to educate the public about the critical importance of organ donation and the life-saving benefits of vaccinations against bacterial meningitis.

A Journey of Resilience

Kayla St. Pierre’s journey with medical struggles began in 2000 when, at just 10 years old, she was suddenly struck by bacterial meningitis. This life-threatening condition led to a prolonged hospital stay, during which Kayla endured the amputation of both legs and several fingers due to severe complications. Despite these daunting challenges and the shock of going through such an intense period, Kayla's indomitable spirit shone through and she never gave up on surviving and making the most of her life. When her adoptive father, Tony, discovered that against staggering odds of 1 in 100,000, he was a perfect match to donate a kidney to his daughter, it felt like a miracle. His selfless act of love granted Kayla years of a healthy and functioning kidney.

Now, two decades later, Kayla's kidney is failing again, and she faces another race against time to find a donor. At 33, living in Wilmington, MA, Kayla’s resilience continues to inspire those around her. Despite her medical challenges, she graduated high school, earned a degree from Northeastern University, and pursued nursing school, ultimately becoming a psychiatric nurse. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of compassion and support in overcoming life’s toughest battles.

The Mission of Kidney 4 Kayla

Kidney 4 Kayla’s mission is twofold: to find a compatible kidney donor for Kayla and to educate the public on the value of organ donation and the importance of vaccination. The organization speaks on how organ donation can save lives and why living donors can make such a meaningful difference in patients’ lives and emphasizes that preventative measures, such as vaccinations against bacterial meningitis, can prevent the devastating consequences that Kayla faced.

Through sharing Kayla’s story, Kidney 4 Kayla hopes to reach potential donors and let them know how powerful and rewarding the donation experience can be, and foster a broader understanding of the profound impact that organ donation can have. The organization leverages social media platforms, such as its handle @kidney4kayla, to reach a wide audience, where they spread awareness, rally support for Kayla’s cause, and ultimately hope to find a match for Kayla.

Inspiration Behind the Cause

The inspiration behind Kidney 4 Kayla is personal and human, rooted in a drive to save Kayla’s life and to help other patients in similar positions.  Years ago, Tony's act of donating his kidney to Kayla exemplified the extraordinary lengths to which loved ones will go to save each other, and it underscores the urgent need for organ donors—but it also shows how difficult finding a match can be, given the extraordinary odds that he and Kayla beat in order to execute a successful donation. By sharing their story, Kidney 4 Kayla hopes to inspire others to consider organ donation and to highlight the life-saving potential of such selfless acts.
